Defining Communication

In this blog entry, we want you to get to the heart of what it means to communicate. Does communication always mean speaking, making marks on paper, and listening? Are there other ways that we communicate with each other and the world as a whole?

In your post, write a descriptive explanation of a way you have communicated in the past (aside from speaking, writing/art, or listening). What did this form of communication look like? What were you trying to communicate? Why, and with whom? Was your communication effective? Based on this example of communication, arrive at a descriptive definition of Communication itself. How can you define this idea, based on your experience?

Your Hats Respond to Print Ads

Saturday, October 8, 2011

Your Hats Respond to Print Ads

In this blog post, you'll select a print ad of your choosing and critique it using the 5 hats we've studied (Blue, White, Red, Yellow, and Black). In your post, you must include a link to the print ad you've chosen, and then address the ad from each hat's perspective. (hint: in order to use the Blue Hat, you'll have to state the ad's purpose in order to assess how well it's achieving that purpose...)
I have included an example of a thorough and complete response from Ms. Whitman-Allen below.

As always, you can see the rubric for blog posts on Moodle.

deadline: Friday, 10/14, 5:00 p.m.

Ms. Whitman-Allen said...

ad for Emergency Preparedness: http://www.adcouncil.org/Our-Work/Current-Work/Safety/Emergency-Preparedness-Business#Asset1448

Blue Hat: This ad's purpose is to inspire businesses (especially small businesses) to take the necessary steps to prepare for emergency disasters. Based on the gray skies pictured in the ad, I think the ad is specifically talking about weather-related disasters. However, I think this could be more clear somehow, and I would advise the ad council to spend more time specifying what type of disasters the small businesses should fear.

White Hat: There is a red industrial-sized dumpster in the center of the image, filling up almost the entire image. There are office supplies and furniture in the dumpster, almost overflowing, such as filing cabinets, rugs, and rolling desk chairs. All of the furniture appears to be dented or damaged. The ground below the dumpster is dark, as if it has rained recently, and the skies reflect a dark and cloudy atmosphere, also indicating a recent storm. The white letters stating the message of the campaign appear to be painted directly on the dumpster in all caps.

Red Hat: It seems like something really bad happened here, especially because the dumpster itself seems so ripped up and damaged. The colors in this ad are very bold and dark, and it feels like there's a lot to look at in the ad -- almost a bit cluttered.

Yellow Hat: The finality of the dumpster is very effective in communicating that once disaster strikes, you are totally done (out of luck). By showing the damaged goods in the trash, it really successfully shows that not only was the business hurt, but it is in the trash as well. Seems to me that this was a really clever idea.

Black Hat: Because all of the colors in this ad are so saturated (rich and bold), it takes some emphasis off of the dumpster and the supplies in the dumpster. That red makes my eye go straight to the dumpster, then the contrasting sky, but I see the office supplies last and that seems to take away from the importance of them in the image.
